Our spring concert will be a musical exploration of the theme of "LIGHT". As usual, we have a variety of pieces in various styles. We will kick off singing about "LIGHT" as a general concept, then share three fun tunes about the trio of light sources in the heavens (sun, moon, stars). The Innovation vocal ensemble from Jackson State will sing a couple of pieces chosen by their director, Esther Gray, then we will wrap up the first half of the concert with a rousing spiritual by Moses Hogan.
After intermission, we will join forces with Innovation to present the Mid-South premiere of Illuminare, a newly-composed extended work by Elaine Hagenberg. From her website:
"Illuminare is Elaine's first extended work, consisting of five movements for SATB chorus and chamber orchestra. Using lesser-known sacred Latin, Greek, and English texts, the piece takes us through a season of beauty and goodness that has been disrupted by darkness and confusion. But as Light gradually returns, hope is restored, illuminating our future and guiding us in peace."
The music is stunningly beautiful, with masterful choral writing and sparkling accompaniment. Our amazing accompanist, Mitzi Mathenia, will be joined by an ensemble of string and percussion players.
